Bay of Fires

Bay of Fires - This world famous pristine white beach extends for over 50 kms from Binalong Bay in the south to Eddystone Point in the north. The easiest way to reach it is to drive to Binalong Bay from St Helens (C850), from which you can continue north as far as the small settlement of The Gardens.

It's a made road as far as Binalong Bay then mostly a gravel road from Binalong Bay to the Gardens.

Named by Captain Tobias Furneaux in 1773 for the many Aboriginal fires he saw as he sailed by, the area is still dotted with middens, which should not be disturbed.

Lonely Planet guide voted the Bay of Fires as no 2 beach in the world in 2009. You may;
  • enjoy any beach activities in this lovely place where white beaches contrast with turquoise seas and are interspersed with pink granite headlands splashed with orange lichen.
  • have free camps in the many designated areas - Grants Lagoon, Jenneret Beach, Swimcart Beach, Cosy Corner, Sloop Lagoon, Big Lagoon, and further north at Policeman's Point. Facilities are minimal but the fantastic scenery makes up for this. Many campsites are sheltered.
  • visit the sheltered lagoons and estuaries are a haven for anglers and birdwatchers.
  • be challenged as you indulge in a luxury guided walking experience.
  • expect to see grey kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, echidnas and possums.
